Book Appraisal: 101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think by Brianna Wiest

Brianna Wiest remains one of my top 3 favorite authors on Medium. And this book is like all of her best articles collected in book form.

The book uses a similar method to her articles, like a notebook of summaries of every self-help book’s main points. It is thought-provoking, precise, wise, and beautifully written. There are plenty to choose from, literally among 101 short chapters.

It shelters a wide range of subjects, from subliminal behaviors to daily routines, emotional intelligence, social intelligence, cognitive biases, resilience, and lovely little segways now and then, like the one about experiences we don’t yet have English words for.

Discuss and analyze some complicated feelings and situations, such as how people close to us, or people we once loved, can become strangers again, how to identify uncomfortable feelings that indicate that you are on the right path, what the feelings you repress most is what you try to tell yourself, how people hold back from achieving true happiness, why we unconsciously love to create problems for ourselves, the ideas you have about your life that only hold you back, and what to do when you don’t. You don’t know what to do with your life or when you’re stuck.

such as signs that you’re doing better than you think, things we don’t understand about emotions, how intrinsically motivated people become the finest versions of themselves, ways repressed emotions appear in your life, or even Reasons why distress is often crucial to growth.

It also teaches us some psychological tools and tricks, like not letting illogical thoughts ruin your life, why you shouldn’t pursue comfort, why you should thank the people who hurt you the most and things you need to know about yourself. Before having the life you want, how do you measure a good life? There is no letting go. There is acceptance of what has already remained done and small ways to deepen the relationship with anyone.

The book is an excellent entry point into the self-help genre or even an excellent review of the main points, although we can still learn many new things from it. I highly recommend it.
